Introduction to the study of the deconfined phase of QCD and the phenomenology of relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The lectures will deal with:

  1. Introduction to heavy-ion collisions and the deconfinement transition;
  2. Thermodynamics of relativistic quantum field theories;
  3. Global symmetries of QCD, implications for hadronic and nuclear physics and the chiral phase-transition;
  4. The Hagedorn model and the Hadron-Resonance Gas;
  5. Gluon saturation and the initial state of heavy-ion collisions;
  6. Ideal and dissipative relativistic hydrodynamics;
  7. The hard probes of the medium: jet-quenching;
  8. The hard probes of the medium: heavy-flavour particles;
  9. Kinetic theory of a relativistic gauge plasma;
  10. The liquid-gas phase transition of nuclear matter
