Program
The course will present basic elements of effective field theories, focusing in particular on soft collinear effective field theory applied to scattering processes at hadron colliders.
The concept of effective field theory will be introduced in the first two lectures. To this end we will discuss tools such as the method of expansion by momentum regions, the operator product expansion and the renormalization-group improved perturbation theory. In turn, these ideas will be applied to the effective weak interactions.
As a warm-up for soft-collinear effective theory, the third lecture will present an application of soft effective theory (SET) to electron-electron scattering in QED.
SCET will be introduced in the fourth and fifth lectures. Starting point will be the momentum region analysis of the Sudakov form factor, then we will derive the SCET Lagrangian and discuss the QCD vector current and its renormalization in SCET.
In the sixth and seventh lectures we will apply SCET to the resummation of large logarithms appearing in the Drell-Yan process near threshold.
In the eighth lecture we will introuce the collinear anomaly and discuss its relevance for the resummation of large logarithms in Drell-Yan at small transverse momentum.
Prerequisites: quantum field theory.
